Ace Your Salesforce Interview: Research is Key

Dec 2, 2024 | Mindset, People First Method

Securing a Salesforce job requires more than technical skills—it requires thorough company research. Understand the company’s mission, values, market, and competitors. Use LinkedIn to learn about its culture. During the interview, connect your skills to their needs, ask insightful questions, and evaluate the company and team. This approach helps you stand out, tailor your responses, and determine if the company is the right fit.

This post is a vignette from Episode 18 of Salesforce Trails and Trials.

Salesforce skills are in high demand, and landing that dream job requires more than just technical knowledge. To truly impress potential employers, thorough company research is essential.
Imagine walking into an interview not just knowing about Salesforce, but also about the company’s goals, challenges, and opportunities within their markets. This level of preparation showcases your initiative, enables you to shift the power dynamics during the meeting, and positions you as a valuable asset from day one.

Here’s how to research effectively:

  • Explore the company website: Delve into the “About Us” section, understand their mission, values, and target market.
  • Read industry reports and news articles: Stay updated on the company’s performance and industry trends as well as noteworthy events at a couple of their competitors.
  • Utilize LinkedIn: Learn about the company culture, team structure, and even the interviewers themselves to find commonalities and questions.

Be sure to prepare several people first questions to smoke out their culture and values and confirm you want to go where they do in the environment they create.

During the interview, demonstrate your research by:
  • Connecting your skills to the company’s needs: Explain how your expertise and your intangible skills can contribute to their specific projects and initiatives both today and tomorrow.
  • Asking insightful questions: Inquire about their Salesforce implementation, areas of success, dissapointment, or challenges they’re facing, or future plans.

With your questions in hand, request an opportunity to open your own evaluation into the company, the team, and even your future manager. This is where you showcase your value by demonstrating initiative and the oppotunity cost of working with them when others likely desire to have you join their team as well. You want to posture yourself like you don’t need the role and let it become clear that the team really needs someone like you.

Researching the company helps you:
  • Stand out from other candidates: Showcase your dedication, attention to detail, and proactive approach.
  • Tailor your responses: Align your values, skills, and experience with the company’s requirements.
  • Determine if the company is the right fit: Gain valuable insights into the company culture and work environment.
Remember, thorough research is your first step towards a successful Salesforce interview. Leverage this planning and do a mock interview with someone you know in the Salesforce ecosystem for an even better outcome. Send me a note if we can assist.
